Mentre l'unione Europea prova a portare a compimento il progetto del gasdotto Nabucco, che dovrebbe portare gas dall'Asia centrale all'Europa centro-occidentale, si fa più serrata la conceorrenza di analoghi progetto promossi dalla Russia. Primo fra tutti il gasdotto South Stream, basato su rotte ed approvvigionamenti alternativi.

Il progetto Nabucco nasce nel 2002 da un accordo tra le principali compagnie appartenenti al settore energetico di Turchia, Austria, Bulgaria, Romania, Ungheria, alle quali si è aggiunta, nel gennaio scorso, la RWE, compagnia tedesca. I 3.300 km di gasdotto che, dal 2015, faranno confluire il gas proveniente dai due terminali georgiano e iraniano fino all’Austria, dovrebbero rappresentare un primo tentativo di allontanare l’Unione Europea dalla dipendenza dalle forniture di gas russe.
