The Summer School “Understanding Byzantiumin the Balkans: Where the East met / parted from the West”will explore the fascinating phenomenon of Byzantium and its enduring impact on MedievalBalkans. The objective of the Summer School is to address the complexsocio-economic, cultural and political processes that led to the transformationof the Roman world and emergence of Byzantiumand the Balkans as gravitational zones between East and West. Themain goal is to stimulate the critical thinking and to raise the understandingof Byzantium and the Balkans and their place ininternational history, grasping them not as a factorof East-West divisionbut as a integrative component of the European culturalhistory.
The Summer School is integral partof Ohrid Summer University (OSU) which is an academic program for young faculty, PhD candidates, postgraduates,researchers and professionals,which offersi ntensive,problem oriented and research based courses from the domain of social sciences and humanities.
