Description: Founded in 1804, Kazan University is the second oldest university in the Russian Federation. An internationally recognised centre of academic excellence, it is routinely listed among top 10 institutions of higher education in the country. In October, 2009 the University received high federal status. This was the logical continuation of the 205-year history of the development of Kazan University and a foothold for breakthroughs in the field of educational technologies. The university built new laboratories and classes, introduced new technologies and subjects, and collaborated with variousindustries and businesses. Federal status opened up new opportunities for educational initiatives, research, and international engagement at KFU.
KFU has over 47,000 students who follow 300 degree programs. It employs members of science academies, professors, state prize winners, and leading scientists. Visiting professors of foreign universities provide their experience and connections to the benefit of KFU students. The University's schools of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Linguistics, and Oriental Studies are world-renowned; it is said to be the birthpplace of organic chemistry, and the home of the largest center for Oriental Studies in Europe. KFU continues to serve as a leading national research centre, providing its students and staff, as well as academic visitors, with many laboratories, excellent museums, a botanical garden, research field stations, three astronomic observatories and many other facilities. Over the last decade it has succeeded in promoting state-of-the art research in the areas of nanotechnologies and biomedicine, psychology and cultural studies, humanitarian and pedagogic technologies, often taking advantage of interdisciplinary approaches. The University is a recognized leader in international cooperation. Each year KFU members win dozens of grants from international foundations, involving themselves in projects with cutting-edge research centers in many countries. KFU students and professors actively participate in bilateral research and exchange programs with about 100 partner institutions in more than 35 countries.
