Transforming Sovereignties

Location: Tartu, Estonia
Period: 28 - 29 September 2007

For several years, the concept - or, rather, a variety of concepts - of sovereignty has been in the limelight of political debates in Europe, especially in its eastern part. Regained with the collapse of the Soviet Union, constantly threatened by ambitious neighbours and international corporations, state sovereignty is now, according to some, being bartered away to the European Union. The rapidity with which political allegiances have shifted has, in fact, been such that there have been few occasions for calm and careful consideration of the nature and descriptive usefulness of the concept of sovereignt
