European Regional Master`s Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe (ERMA)

Brief description: ERMA is a full time, interdisciplinary program focused on the development of democracy and human rights in South East Europe. It is a joint initiative by University of Sarajevo, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and University of Bologna-Forli’ Campus, Institute for Central-Eastern and Balkan Europe, jointly co-financed since 2000/01 by the European Commission through the EIUC (European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratization) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy via the Embassy of the Republic of Italy to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The program lasts for one year, awarding the students with 60 ECTS and a double degree diploma of both universities (UNSA and UNIBO).
ERMA responds to the need to create a young generation of professionals in the field of human rights protection and democratization in the area of the South-Eastern Europe. The program is therefore focused on human rights and democracy as essential factors for the economic and political stability. The program is particularly addressed to students with academic background in the fields of Humanities, Law, Political Sciences, Sociology and Languages who intend to boost their careers in international organizations, NGO’s, Public administrations and media outlet involved in the processes of EU enlargement and stabilization of the countries of the South-Eastern Europe. The master program is part of the EU Global Campus of Regional Master Programmes and Diplomas managed by EIUC.
The study plan of the master consists of two semesters with three terms. During the Term I students follow courses and take exams at the University of Sarajevo, CIS Center for Interdisciplinary Studies.
The term is structured in six educational modules and three elective courses, together awarding 30 ECTS: Philosophy of Human Rights; Democracy; Ethnicity, Nationalism and Religion; Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Mechanisms for Human Rights Protection and Implementation; Methodology of Academic Research and Writing. Successfully students proceed to the Term II and participate in seven-week internships at selected IGO’s, NGO’s, think-tanks and research institutes working in the field of human rights and democracy across SEE (12 ECTS).
Finally, students take part to the Term III and focus on finalizing their master’s theses in Italy, accommodated at the CEUB University Residential Center of Bertinoro, while attending short seminars and lectures within the yearly international summer school organized by IECOB (18 ECTS).
30 selected students receive study grants covering normal living costs during term I and II (November to July) in the overall amount of 4.500 EURO. During the term three in Italy (September to mid-October) all students are accommodated at the Bologna University Residential Center of Bertinoro, Italy, where the costs of lodging and dinning (full board) are covered by the programme for students of these two target groups. Additionally, students also receive reimbursements in the overall amount of 1.200 EURO for the three terms of the programme, to cover travel expenses, health insurance and other costs related to the programme, such as diploma recognition, residence permit, visa and translations, where applied.
ERMA is a joint cooperation of the participation universities: University of Bologna, University of Sarajevo, University of Belgrade, University of Graz, University of the Ruhr, University of Peloponnese, University of Zagreb, New Bulgarian University, University Ss. Cyril and Methodius, Higher School of Economic- National Research University, Moscow.
Scholarships
Students from TG I and TG II receive study grants covering normal living costs during term I and II (November to July) in the overall amount of 4.500 EURO. During the term three in Italy (September to mid-October) all students are accommodated at the Bologna University Residential Center of Bertinoro, Italy, where the costs of lodging and dinning (full board) are covered by the programme for students of these two target groups.
Eligibility
ERMA is open to candidates who hold a university degree (min 240 ECTS) in disciplines relevant to human rights; law, politics, economics, sociology, journalism, psychology and humanities from an accredited university. The university degree of the applicants must be earned during studies lasting either 4 or 5 years within the former undergraduate studies provisions, or 5 years (3+2) within I and II cycle studies provisions in accordance with the Bologna process. Please note that accepted candidates must start the diploma recognition process by the University of Sarajevo at the moment of acceptance to the Programme.
Fluency in English is a necessary prerequisite for admission, as the Programme language is English. Therefore the students must have sufficient language skills and provide evidence for their proficiency. The Master Programme recognizes the following international English Language proficiency certificates:
- 1. TOEFL minimum score of 560 paper-based, computer based 220, IBT not less than 83
- 2. British Council’s IELTS - minimum band 6.5 and no less than 6.0 in any of its subsections.
- 3. CAE and CPE Cambridge Exams.
- 4. Applicants with English as native language or applicants who had previous university education in English language need to prove competency through their transcripts or certificates issued by the respective universities.
