Description of the Conference
The annual conference of the Canadian Association of Slavists will take place at the University of Calgary, in Canada’s most dynamic city set against the spectacular backdrop of the Rocky Mountains and Banff National Park.
This year, CAS overlaps with: Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Hungarian Studies, Study of Religion, Theatre Research, Women’s and Gender Studies, Study of Education and Higher Education, Applied Theatre, Jewish Studies, History, Translation Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Film Studies, and Church History.
Panels
The conference traditionally features panels in the following areas (in alphabetical order):
- History (Russian, Ukrainian, Soviet, East European)
- Linguistics (comparative and Slavic)
- Pedagogy and Second Language Acquisition (study abroad; teaching of individual skills; curriculum design, presentation of new teaching materials; use of technology in language teaching, etc.).
- Politics in Eastern Europe
- Policy and Governance in Eastern Europe
- Russian and Eastern European Cinema (history, genre, individual film directors, themes).
- Slavic Literatures and Cultures (Many panels are dedicated to discussing individual writers and poets from Russia, Belarus, Poland, or the Balkans; various themes (history and literature, WWII, etc.); theoretical approaches including gender studies; history of literature (18th c. to contemporary), music, religion, etc.).
- Ukrainian Studies (The meeting of the Canadian Association Ukrainian Studies (CAUS ) is traditionally part of the CAS conference and therefore Ukrainian Studies are always very prominently represented at the CAS Annual Meeting. A large number of panels are formed on Ukrainian folklore and ethnography; diaspora studies; Ukrainian Canadian literature; museum studies; Holodomor studies; Ukrainian literature, politics, and culture).
Guidelines for submission
Proposals for interdisciplinary panels with other associations are very welcome. They are always a highlight at the CAS conference. Additional funding from the Federation is available for such panels. Please do not hesitate to contact the Program Chair, Bohdan Harasymiw, bharasym@ucalgary.ca for assistance or information.
Proposals are invited for individual papers, panels, roundtable discussions and graduate student activities. Complete panels are preferred. Forms for panel, roundtable and individual proposals are available on the CAS website: http://www.ualberta.ca/~csp/cas/conference.html. Please follow our abstract specifications when submitting your proposal(s).
Young scholars and graduate students are especially encouraged to participate. We kindly ask our senior CAS membership to support graduate students in applying. Travel grants are available to graduate students. An application form for 2016 Travel Grant will be sent out in March by the Secretary-Treasurer and will also be available on the CAS website.
Deadline for all proposals is 29 January 2016.
The program committee will respond to all proposals by 16 February 2016.
