Baku Slavic University

Description: Baku Slavic University, one of the leading state educational institutions of our country, was created with the Decree of the President of Azerbaijan Republic H.A.Aliyev on June 13, 2000 on the basis of Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of the Russian Language and Literature (APIRLL), named after M.F.Akhundov.

It is a unique higher educational institution with the mission to create exemplary professionals in rare fields of study for the entire Eastern area. The honored scientist and playwright Kamal Mehti Abdullayev, a doctor of philological sciences and professor,  was appointed as the Rector of BSU by the decree of the President of the Republic. Under his direct leadership a program of far-reaching reforms has been prepared and realized; the educational, material, and technical basis of the university has been renovated, and BSU has become one of the leading educational institutions of the country.

The constant expansion of relations of independent Azerbaijan with foreign countires, including East European countries, necessitates highly trained specialists and personnel, whose attention is focused on profound knowledge of the language and literature and a broad range of economical, geographical, social, political, and cultural aspects of these countries. To realize this task at a high level, radical reorganization of the higher educational institution was necessary. As a result, new higher educational institution with much higher status able to ensure a wide specialization of students has been created. Within a short period, BSU has become a multi-profile educational institution with a highly specialized and professional staff, educational and academic potential, and a contemporary infrastructure.

Nowadays Baku Slavic University is a unique educational and cultural center that studies spiritual values of Slavic peoples. The University continues to uphold serious researches in the Russian and other Slavic languages and literature and provide training qualified educators not only for our republic but also for many other eastern countries.

BSU has created multilateral linkages with higher educational institutions in a number of foreign countries. The international relations of the University are regulated by agreements and contracts, concluded with authoritative institutes of higher education, scientific and public organizations of Russia, the Ukraine, Bulgaria, Czech, Poland, Greece, and other countries.

Student life at the university is also interesting and meaningful. The University offers academic facilities and services such as a high level renovated assembly hall, a conference hall, a library, and sports facilities. Students become members of independent societies, scientific societies, CJW, and sport sections. Our athletes -- especially the student volleyball, handball, and basketball teams -- are among the winners of the country's sport contests "Spartakiada" and "Universiada".
