Short Description

Tallinn University was established in 2005, merging several universities and research institutes in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The university is the fastest-growing in the country, strong in social sciences and humanities and rapidly-developing in natural sciences.

Tallinn University is an innovative and academically enriching university. It is acknowledged both locally and internationally for its role as a centre for science and education.

The mission of Tallinn University is to support the sustainable development of Estonia through research and its application to academic partnership, including the preparation of intellectuals as well as public dialogue in order to facilitate this partnership.

Tallinn University incorporates 19 institutes and 6 colleges in which study and research is conducted in six different disciplines:

More than 9,500 students, including 500 foreign students, are enrolled in Tallinn University’s bachelor, master and doctoral study programmes. Approximately 15,000 people also participate in further education and Open University studies each year.

The university employs a total of 1,100 people, including 580 researchers and teaching staff. Compared to other institutions, Tallinn University has the greatest percentage of foreigners (8.5%) working as regular academic employees in Estonia.

The International Summer School organized by Tallinn University hosts about 300 participants from 50 countries every year.

Tallinn University was founded when a number of universities and academic institutes were consolidated into a single institution on 18 March 2005.

Mission

The mission of Tallinn University is to support the sustainable development of Estonia by facilitating research and implementing its results, preparing intellectuals, participating in social discussion and pursuing academic partnerships.
Pursuing the principles of the Magna Charta of European Universities, Tallinn University upholds traditions originating from medieval Europe, which declare that, “The aim of a university is to develop and mediate knowledge regardless of religion, ideology, economic pressure and government policy, and to preserve the community of scholars and learners dedicated to this.

Research

Tallinn University is the fastest growing university in Estonia. The university has committed itself to the strategic goal of becoming an international research university with a strong social conscience and an open-minded, flexible and collegial environment for academic and personal growth. It is also a university in which the considerable academic freedom guaranteed to both the faculties and the students are balanced by stringent quality requirements.

Our academic staff consists of about 600 people who are experts in their fields of education, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, health sciences and fine arts. Compared to other institutions in Estonia, we have the highest percentage of foreign academic staff working full time – 8.5 %. In total, our university’s staff consists of more than 1100 people.
