Shale Gas and Renewable Energy: Reducing Central and Eastern Europe’s Dependency on Natural Gas Imports

This workshop on "Shale Gas and Renewable Energy: Reducing Central and Eastern Europe’s Dependency on Natural Gas Imports" is promoted by the Centre for East European Language Based Area Studies (CEELBAS) and will take place on June 25, 2012 in London.

The workshop will address energy issues in Central and Eastern Europe. Central and Eastern European countries rely heavily on energy imports from Russia, especially natural gas. Consequently, their energy policy is influenced by changes in the prices of natural gas and by quantities of resources that are available for export.

UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies is organizing this workshop to analyze the prospects for shale gas and renewable energy in Central and Eastern Europe. Specifically, the largest resources of shale gas in Central and Eastern Europe have been identified in Poland and Ukraine.

This workshop aims at examining the degree to which the regulatory frameworks in countries in the region support the adoption and diffusion of these new technologies. In addition, it will discuss the potential contribution of foreign participation in this process.
Participants include experts in the field from the spheres of academia, policy, business, government, and law.
