The UK Baltic Study Group announces a call for papers for the 2013 BASEES/ICCEES European Congress, to be held in Cambridge in April 2013. The topic of the panel will be 'Minorities and integration in the Baltic states'.
Since 1991, a broad range of studies has analysed the relations between dominant and non-dominant ethnic and/or linguistic groups in the Baltic states. Political and social science scholarship has pointed to the complex dynamics of integration, focussing on state policies and individual adaptation strategies of members of minority groups. Turning to an aspect of integration much less researched, this panel will discuss the role in the integration of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian societies played by the political participation of minorities.
The UK Baltic Study Group invites papers that address the forms, aims, and strategies of minority political participation in the three countries. Paper givers are encouraged to reflect particularly on the following questions, though are not limited to these:
Given the high salience of the topic, the UK Baltic Study Group particularly invites papers engaging in comparative analysis of different minority groups and/or different country cases.
Interested scholars shoud register and submit their abstract of no more than 250 words by 01 September 2012, including full contact details and a brief academic biography, indicating institutional affiliation, research foci at http://cms.computingpro.co.uk/balticstudy. Presentations should not exceed 15-20 min.
