The Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages at the University of Oslo announces a position as a research associate (country participant) to study symbolic nation-building in Montenegro. The research will be part of a larger project on "Strategies of symbolic nation-building in West Balkan states: intents and results", which will be conducted in 2011-2013 in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, Croatia. The project will include collaborators from seven countries and a large-scale opinion survey conducted in these countries carried out by IPSOS-Strategic Puls.
Applicants should hold a master’s degree or a PhD in humanities or a social science discipline (history, political science, sociology, religious studies, social anthropology, political geography, etc). The exact discipline is not important since the project is multidisciplinary, but applicants must document an interest in as well as competence in nation-building theory and questions of nation-building in present-day Montenegro. Applicants must be resident in Montenegro or some other post-Yugoslav state.

The country participants commit themselves to:
• participate in two workshops. The first workshop will be organized in Rijeka 24-25 February 2011. This workshop will be devoted primarily to hammering out the questions for the survey that will be conducted later in 2011;
• prior to the first workshop, each country participant must submit a list of possible country specific questions on symbols, commemorations and other potentially contested issues of nation-building in his/her country;
• write one chapter for a volume edited by the organizer. A first draft of this chapter must be submitted at least one month prior to the second workshop that will be organized in fall 2012;
• write a specialized article on symbolic nation-building in "his/her" country in an international refereed journal. A first draft of this article must
be submitted before summer 2012.
Each country participant will be paid a fee of 30,000 Norwegian kroner, or approximately 3,750 Euros for his/her work, to be paid in two installments. Payment is conditioned on fulfillment of the terms specified above.
