Music Theory and Criticism in Russia and Eastern Europe

Description of the Conference/Event

The BASEES Study Group for Russian and Eastern European Music invites proposals for its 2011 annual conference, to be held at the Faculty of Music, University of Oxford,on Saturday 15 October. Past conferences have been devoted to the themes of ‘Eastern European Musical Relations’, ‘Music in Russia and Eastern Europe after “The Thaw”’, ‘Russia’s Musical Revolutionaries’, ‘Musical Nationalism and Modernism in Russia and Eastern Europe’ and ‘Central and Eastern European Music: Musical Crossroads?’. This year the conference will concentrate on music theorists and writers on music. Proposals are welcome that deal with any aspect of music theory and criticism in Russia and Eastern Europe as well as on Russian and Eastern European music.

The keynote will delivered by Prof. David Fanning (University of Manchester) and musicologist Michelle Assay

Eligible topics for the conference

Papers that draw on a variety of methods (including ethnomusicological approaches) are welcome and submissions that propose means of adapting and exploiting past theories for the benefit of contemporary musicology are particularly encouraged.

  • the appropriateness of Western-based theories and analytical models for thestudy of Russian and Eastern European music


Guidelines for submission

Abstracts of no more than 400 words and short biographical notes (of no more than 200 words) should be sent to reemstudygroup@googlemail.com by 30 April 2011. Abstracts will be reviewed and results will be announced by 15 June 2011.
