University of Debrecen

Name in Hungarian: Debreceni Egyetem

Description: The University of Debrecen (UD) is the oldest institution of higher education in continuous operation in Hungary based in the same city. Its predecessor was founded in 1538 as the Reformed College of Debrecen. UD was formed in 2000 by (re)uniting formerly independent institutions. It has a student body of 33,000. Its 15 faculties and 25 doctoral schools offer the widest choice of majors in Hungary. More than half of the 1500 instructors have academic degrees, 140 are doctors of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and 30 are members of the Academy.

The university is a renowned research centre even on the international scale. It is among the top three universities in the country, possessing 14-15% of the research volume carried out in Hungary. With its annual R&D income of about 17 million €, University of Debrecen is one of the most rapidly developing knowledge centers of the Eastern-Central-European region. The University’s mission is to turn into a research university with entrepreneurship, and to play a key role in the economic growth of the North Great Plain Region. Owning a research infrastructure in its new Life Science Building, providing world-class quality services by highly qualified researchers, and operating an extremely successful biotechnological incubation unit, University of Debrecen creates a superb environment for cooperation between researchers, companies and investors.

Centre Of Agricultural Sciences

The center is the headquarters and the coordinator of higher education, research and advising in agriculture in the Trans-Tisza region, and its mission is the development of agriculture, the region and rural areas in Eastern Hungary. The Center has two faculties and three research institutes.

The Medical And Health Sciences Center

The center has approximately 5,000 students, taught by a faculty of 900. It has been recognized as a Training Centre of Excellence by the Hungarian Accreditation Committee, and is ranked among Europe’s 500 most dynamically growing companies. The MHSC assists in the treatment of one and a half million people annually, applying the most up-to-date medical procedures.

The Center Of Arts, Humanities And Sciences

The center is a multidisciplinary coordinating unit within the university comprising eight academic faculties, two secondary and one primary schools and a number of interfaculty units.
