The main topic of the summer school will be the phenomena of globalisation, analyzed from different points of view. This issue will be approached in a multi-disciplinary framework, including anthropology, cultural theory, history, media studies, philosophy, politics and sociology.
The term "globalisation" adds togheter the concepts of local and global, of life-worlds and world-system, linked in a variety of relationship. Besides, today, globalisation has entered a new phase. In fact after 200-years of egemony of Western world, once again the world is divided in a multi-polar system. Moreover in this kind of world global networks, communication, power and also conflict, are becoming wider and tighter.
So the primary aim of the summer school is to answer some fundamental questions about the phenomena of globalisation, that involving all the world.
MA and PhD students in the humanities and social sciences are invited to participate. The summer school will consist of a series of lectures, seminars, student workshops and student trips, lead by scholars of different backgrounds. The students should prepare same reading in order to participate in the seminars and workshops (the reading list will be available after the registration deadline).
The language of the summer school is English, so intermediate level of English is required.
The pariticipants will receive an attendance certificate and, moreover, upon full participation and completion of a 2500-word essay by September 15, students will be awarded 5 ECTS points.
Some of the speakers are: Prof. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (Columbia University); Prof. Tiina Kirss (University of Tartu); Prof. Bruce Knauft (Emory University); Prof. Nick Lawrence (Warwick University); Prof. Graeme MacDonald (Warwick University); Prof. Rein Raud (Tallinn University); Prof. Saskia Sassen (Columbia University), Prof. György Schöpflin (MEP for Hungary; University of Bologna).
Ten Tallinn University students and six University of Bologna students pay a reduced course fee of 35 euro.
All the other paricipants have to pay 250 euro.
A limited number of additional grants covering the course fee are available for motivated students whose home countries have fewer opportunities to offer grants. In order to be considered for such a grant, mention it on registration.
