Papers, essays and articles in Economics on Central Eastern Europe and the Balkans

This category includes a number of papers, studies and documents about the economic transition in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkan countries throughout the last centuries, leading up to recent, largely European Union entry, issues.

Here you can find discussions and studies on the economic consequences of the Balkan conflicts or the European Union's (EU) enlargement process, which has arguably been Europe's greatest contribution to world peace and stability in the past 50 years. EU membership helped transform former communist dictatorships into prosperous and peaceful democracies from Romania to Estonia. But as the EU enlargement seems to be now stalling, what will be the prospects for those economies that have just recently «got in» and what will happen to those that are still «outside»?

Resources include online information, analyses and opinions, dissertations, research projects and documents in full text papers. Among other information, these provide cross-region analyses and discussions on different types of economy, including the degree of market orientation, levels of economic development, most important natural resources, unique areas of specialization etc. Predictions about key future macroeconomic trends are also given.
