This paper describes the main characteristics of a new player on the Russian political chessboard, the youth organisation Molodaya Gvardiya ("Young Guard"), the youth branch of Russia's dominant party Edinaya Rossiya ("United Russia"). The ideal and aims of this organization, as well as its perspective role in the Russian political system are the object of this study.
Giorgio Comai has graduated in European Political Systems, Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Bologna; he attended the Interdisciplinary Master's in East European Research and Studies (Mirees), and graduated with honours writing a thesis on "The Processes of Change of Power in the Countries of the CIS".
While at university, he has been a guest student for a semester at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow, Poland, and for a year at the Russian State University of Humanities (RGGU), Moscow, Russia.
He is interested in the countries of the CIS, including the Caucasus and Central Asia. His current focus of interest is: pro-governmental youth organisations in Russia and the countries of the CIS, as well as state projects for patriotic education both at national and regional level.
He is fluent in English, Russian, German and reads Polish.
Pecob Working Papers Series is a collection of peer reviewed scientific papers dealing with Central Eastern and Balkan Europe as well as the post-Soviet space.
