MA in Slavic Studies
Eligibility
Students must have a working familiarity with Russian, including practical abilities, before beginning degree candidacy.
Language expectations: students should be able to show, over the course of their studies, a reading knowledge of French, German, Old Church Slavonic or Old Russian, and a second Slavic language.
Students concentrating in early Slavic should also be prepared to work with Latin and Classical Greek.
The Department expects students to have sufficient background to work successfully in graduate-level courses from other departments associated with their degree program.
Program requirements
Course work
Ten approved courses (30 credits) on an advanced level from Slavic and East European offerings, normally from three (3) of the following areas:
- Economics
- History
- Philosophy/Theology
- Political Science
- Slavic and East European Languages and Literatures
- Sociology
Comprehensive examinations
Sector I (General qualifying examinations)
- Major emphasis area: a written qualifying examination
- Minor emphasis area: a written qualifying examination
- A written review, with critical bibliography, of a problem in the history of Slavic Studies
Sector II (Special field examinations, integrative)
- Oral colloquium on an assigned topic
- Written review / critique of a work in the special field
- A specific period, author, or movement in literature or philosophy
- The Russian language--advanced proficiency and specific problem areas
- A special approved topic (e.g. Linguistic theory, Russian history, Soviet ideology, etc.)
Application requirements and deadline
In order to apply to this program, you must submit your GRE General Test (strongly recommended), at least two letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, a writing sample (highly recommended, preferably in .pdf format).
