The academic program is designed to improve participants' oral, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in Russian language and to develop their knowledge of Russian history, politics, culture, and society.
The program provides twenty to twenty-four hours per week of in-class instruction in Russian grammar, phonetics, conversation, cultural studies, and literature at universities and major academic centers in Moscow (Moscow International University), St. Petersburg (Russian State Pedagogical University) and Vladimir (KORA Center for Russian Language). All classes are conducted in Russian. Weekly cultural excursions within the host city and a seven- to ten-day mid-program trip are provided each semester. During the academic year (September through May), participants may audit regular host university classes in addition to their Russian courses if schedules permit.
Students receive academic credit for undergraduate- and graduate-level courses through Bryn Mawr College.
