Emerging Translator Mentorship Programme

Description
Applications are now open for the British Centre for Literary Translation's 2014 Emerging Translator Mentorship Programme.
The programme is intended for Anglophone translators with promise rather than experience, who are at a stage in their careers when they would benefit from the opportunity to work closely with an experienced mentor over a six month period.
Launched in 2010, the scheme has already produced thirty ‘graduates’ in languages ranging from Catalan to Tamil. Mentors and mentees work together in a combination of face to face meetings and also through online communication such as email or Skype.
An anthology First Lines is published each year to showcases the work of the mentees. Limited numbers of #1 and #2 are still available. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Mentorship 2014

Applications are invited for mentorships in the following languages:
- Arabic: mentor Paul Starkey
- Danish: mentor Barbara Haveland
- Dutch: mentor David Colmer
- Finnish: mentor Ruth Urbom
- Japanese: mentor Michael Emmerich
- Norwegian: mentor Don Bartlett
- Polish: mentor Antonia Lloyd Jones
- Russian: mentor Robert Chandler
- Non-language-specific: mentor Shaun Whiteside
This mentorship is open to translators working from any language into English not already covered by the programme. A mentorship in Portuguese (mentor Margaret Jull Costa) has been awarded to Lucy Greaves as part of her prize for winning this year’s Harvill Secker Young Translators’ Prize.
The prize was awarded at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on 8 October.
How to apply
If you wish to apply, please submit the following to Ms Sarah Bower at S.Bower@uea.ac.uk:
- A brief, up to date CV
- A statement as to why you believe you would benefit from a mentorship and how you would use it
- A short sample of your translation work (not more than 2000 words) with accompanying notes. Please also identify your original text clearly.
We expect most applications to come from translators living and working in the UK, but will consider all applications on their merits.
Please note a mentorship will involve a significant time commitment over the six month period so you should give careful consideration to your ability to give this commitment before applying.
The deadline for applications is 11 November 2013 and successful applicants will be informed by 2 December 2013. Mentorships will commence after the New Year break on 2 January 2014.
