Call for Papers - Workshop: "Social and economic development in Central Asia: Theory and practice"

Conference venue: London, UK
Period: January 24, 2014
Deadline for submitting abstracts: December 31, 2013

Description

The economies and societies of Central Asia and the Caucasus are grappling with the consequences of post-Soviet capitalist markets, new regional trade patterns, and intensifying competition on assets. Depleting local resources, migration, environmental problems, poverty and conflicts all present formidable challenges. What are realistic development options for the region and how do we engage with the theory of post-Soviet development?
The event will discuss these questions at a one-day workshop in London.

Eligible topics for the conference

Participation is open to postgraduate students, PhD candidates, independent researchers and early career academics. Papers in the following themes are especially welcome:

  • Theory and politics of development
  • Foreign aid, investment and development
  • Oil, gas and mining industries in regional development
  • Gender, ethnicity and religion
  • Corruption, business and self-governance
  • Migration, trade and local economies
  • Information technologies, public infrastructure, health and education
  • The environment: water, nuclear waste, pollution and disaster management
