Call for Papers - Post-Graduate Conference: New Research in Language-Based Area Studies

Description
This is a call for papers for a cross-Centre post-graduate conference in Language-Based Area Studies, organized by the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW); the Centre for East European Language-Based Area Studies (CEELBAS); the Centre for Russian Central and East European Studies (CRCEES); and the White Rose East Asia Centre (WREAC).
The conference will be held at the University of Manchester on 13-14 March, 2014. The aim of the conference is to explore new avenues for researching the Arabic speaking world, China and Japan, and Eastern Europe and Russia; to encourage comparative studies of these regions and countries; to facilitate a cross-centre dialogue; and to offer a forum for postgraduates to present their work to peers.
Eligible topics
Papers on the following broad themes will be particularly welcome:
- The global vs. the local
- Social imaginaries
- Nation-building: continuities and discontinuities
- Identity politics and the media
- Language in use: discourses, narratives and perspectives
- The production, maintenance and transformation of power
- Religion as politics
Guidelines for submission
Abstracts of no more than 200 words, including the title and university affiliation, should be submitted by 1 December 2013 to the following email address: lbasconference2014@gmail.com
Bursaries to cover travel and accommodation expenses will be offered to students from the partner-universities of the four Centres sponsoring the conference. (More details about the funding will be made available after the selection of abstracts.)
