The first great insurrection against the Soviet system after the end of the Second World War occurred in Hungary between October 23 and November 4, 1956. Nearly every aspect of that episode is known: the student demonstrations that triggered the revolt, the repression, the role of Imre Nagy in guiding fragile governments and the "brotherly" intervention of the Red Army.
Moscow's reaction was backed not only by the Socialist bloc, but also by communist parties all over the world, including the Italian Communist Party (PCI). The PCI and its newspapers took an intransigent attitude towards the Hungarian events and tolerated the bloody repression organized by the Soviet army. In addition, it started a disinformation campaing that omitted some facts while altering others on all its major newspapers and magazines.
Drawing from «l’Unità», «Rinascita», «Vie Nuove», «Nuovi argomenti», «Ragionamenti», «Realtà sovietica» e «Mondo Operaio» Alessandro Frigerio reconstructs the smear campaign orchestrated at Botteghe Oscure (the PCI offices in Rome), higliting its efficiency and the dogmatic orthodoxy of journalists and intellectuals whose ideology was put to use for the benefit of the delegitimization of the revolution.
In the background, a critical turning point, after the XX Congress of the Soviet Communist Party, when PCI's policy was influenced by its supremacy over the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) and by the pominent figure of its Palmiro Togliatti, who lead the party during the Stalinist period and its immediate aftermath.
At the end of the volume, Frigerio analyzes the cautious stand adopted by the communist press during the Prague Spring in 1968.
