Description:The beginnings of The Azerbaijan University of Languages can be traced to 1937, when the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute opened the School of Foreign Languages. In 1940, the Azerbaijan Communist Party decreed that a separate Institute of Foreign Languages be formed, but the outbreak of World War II caused the new Institute to be quickly reincorporated into the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute. In 1948, the government of Azerbaijan SSR created the Azerbaijan Institute of Foreign Languages in, but it was incorporated into the Azerbaijan Institute of Russian Language and Literature in 1959. Finally, in 1973, the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages was established as an independent institution.
In 1996 the school was renamed the Azerbaijan State Institute of Languages. In 2000 the institute was given university status and renamed as the Azerbaijan University of Languages. The University consists of 5 schools and 28 departments, as well as many active laboratories and scientific research centers. In recent years, the number of students at the university increased from 3000 to 6000.
The Azerbaijan University of Languages has quickly reacted to the reforms in educational system of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and as among the first of Azerbaijani higher educational establishments to switch to the credit system. It established the center for “Maintenance of quality” within the framework of the Tempus project in order to bring quality into the light, and to make tight partnerships with foreign partners. Relations with advanced universities of the world are expanded day by day. Relations with the universities of Turkey, America, England, France and Europe have developed considerably; mutual contracts have been signed; exchange of teachers and students has increased; and work is being done to assure recognition of diplomas across institutions.
The University maintains close relations with UNESCO, operating a UNESCO Translation Department as well as hosting a UNESCO-sponsored faculty chair.
