The State of the Union - SIXTH EDITION
Women in Europe and the World
Venue: Florence, Italy
Period: 5-7 May 2016
The State of the Union conference, organised by the European University Institute (EUI), is an annual event for high-level reflection on the European Union.
Supervised by a committee of influential EUI academics, the scientific content of The State of the Union 2016 is organised around the theme of “Women in Europe and the World”.
High-profile actors in politics and the law, in finance and economics, and in religious and associational life will be invited to discuss the situation of women in Europe and beyond, in a series of keynotes and round table discussions that bring together the worlds of politics and policy with those of academic research.
On the other hand, a series of panels on a number of pressing issues where a gender analysis, the key common denominator of all panels, can help to see more clearly the particular impact that these issues are having on different groups of women will also be organised.
The themes for the panels include:
- Refugees, Migration and Citizenship
- Employment and Social Affairs
- Political and Economic Empowerment
- Conflict and Transitions to Democracy
- Sexual and Reproductive Politics
The European University Institute is an international organisation exclusively committed to post-graduate and post-doctoral education programmes in the social sciences and has strong ties with the EU institutions. To conduct its activities, the EUI gathers the best professors from all over Europe and beyond, as well as a wide number of specially selected researchers and fellows.
The idea to organise the conference stems from the will to contribute to the European and international debate on governance, integration and global challenges, through a special event with qualified and plural participation and a wide resonance. Through The State of the Union, the EUI can share its scientific and organisational assets with partners and stakeholders, making Florence, once each year, the capital of Europe.
