Russian Culture CRCEES Seminar Series

Glasgow, UK

Venue: University of Glasgow, 8 Lilybank Garden, CEES Seminar Room
Period: Wednesday 17th February 2016, 4pm

Prof. John Dunn (Honorary Research Fellow) University of Glasgow

Description

The Russian team at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) of the University of Glasgow, together with the Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies (CRCEES) is delighted to announce the next event of the CRCEES Russian Culture Seminar Series:

"What Happened Next? Does Russia still Have a Two-Tier Media System?"

"This paper is a continuation of an article written in 2011-13, where I suggested that Russia had a two-tier media system, in which some outlets are tightly controlled, while others are conceded a considerable degree of freedom.  Since, however, Vladimir Putin returned to the Presidency, and in particular since the beginning of 2014, the political situation in Russia has been characterised by ‘a tightening of the screws’ and by a comprehensive rejection of common European values and standards.  This change in the political climate means that the time has come to consider the changes that have taken place in the Russian media in the period 2013-2016 and to ask whether the two-tier system described in the article has survived."

In the upcoming months we will have seminars by Konstantin Zarubin (Dalarna University), Lara Ryazanova-Clarke (University of Edinburgh) and Rodolphe Baudin (University of Strasbourg), while other seminars are to be confirmed.
