International Symposium "La Rue et l'E-Rue"

Description

Millions of citizens have been mobilizing and protesting in the streets around the world for years in order to make their voices heard. Often, mobilizations are supported and accompanied by demonstrations in social networks: the E-Street. The international symposium "La Rue et l'E-Rue" is inspired by civil eruptions in the streets and their connection to social networks across the globe.

The symposium is part of the international project "LA RUE COMME LIEU D’EXPRESSION POLITIQUE (Street as a place of political expression)", organized with the support of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, which includes the Department of Political Science at the New Bulgarian University, the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Bucharest, Romania, the Dokuz Eylul Universityin Izmir, Turkey, the French Institute for Anatolian Studies (IFEA) and the CERI - Sciences Po in Paris, France.

Senior scientists and young researchers from Bulgaria,Romania, Turkey, France, Belgium and Austria will present their analyses of different national mobilizations in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective.

The conference will be held in French and Bulgarian

Topics

The conference aims at providing reflections on the relation between the Street (la Rue) and the E-Street (l'E-Rue) on the following topics:

  • Internet and contestation;
  • Social network and reinvention of participation;
  • Creativity and activism, explosion of non-conventional forms of engagement;
  • Democratic awakening from below;
  • Factors and conditions for the new democratic practices;
  • Challenges to representative democracy and its traditional institutions;
  • New mobilization and democracy;
