LCSS Summer School 2016: International Relations & Global Finance

The London Centre for Social Studies is proud to announce its 2nd Summer School for students of International Relations and Finance. Following a successful launch of the School in the summer 2015, LCSS has developed a new enriched programme for 2016 summer. It will be running from 11th July to 5th August 2016. The bespoke programme offers students a practical insight into British culture and society as well as grounding in its unique legal, political and financial system.
The immersive four-week summer school will comprise of a fascinating and entertaining mixture of field trips, cultural experiences, academic activities, and practical work experience at the London Centre for Social Studies office. Each week following their outings, students will be required to write reports on the topics at hand which will give them an excellent opportunity to exercise their English language and academic research skills. They can also benefit from an informal feedback and advice on improving their writing skills.

WEEK 1: International Think Tanks and Financial Institutions

In the first week, students will visit prominent think tanks and policy institutes such as Chatham House and RUSI (Royal United Services Institute), thereby gaining an understanding of the role they play in developing foreign policy as well as a view of Britain’s place in the international community.


WEEK 2: Exploring Micro-cultural and Economic Environment of London. London Bookstores

Week two will be spent focusing on Britain’s cultural wealth including visits to the largest and most prominent bookshops in Europe as well as a field project focusing on one of London’s many ethnic minority communities. Students will get the opportunity to observe how these communities interact with native British people as well as honing their research and communication skills by interviewing members of these communities. They will then write a final report on the topic. This project will give students an invaluable insight into the successes and failures of Britain’s multiculturalist policy of citizenship and will provide them with a deep insight into the competing narratives which constitute modern British society. The students will also have an opportunity to walk around the City of London accompanied by a guide, and exploring the history of the leading financial centre of the world. The walk will finish at the Bank of England Museum, where they can learn about the history of British banknotes and golden reserves of the Bank.


WEEK 3: British Common Law & Art Galleries

Excursions to the Royal Courts of Justice and the Old Bailey will bring to life Britain’s historic legal system. Students will learn the function of each institution and will get the opportunity to discuss the differences between common law and civil law as well as how they combine to constitute an important part of British liberal democracy.


WEEK 4: British Parliamentary System

In the final week, a trip to the Houses of Parliament will put the British political system into context while also affording the opportunity to admire the beautiful neo-gothic building from up close. Students will learn about Britain’s ‘bicameral’ parliamentary system, the various political parties represented in Parliament, and the function of the ‘Cabinet’. This will provide students with a very useful grounding to begin thinking about the nature of parliamentary democracy and its importance in modern Britain. In the final week students will be invited to visit two famous places -Facebook HQ and the Arsenal Stadium – for a behind-the-scenes-look. They will see amazing facilities of the Facebook HQ and Arsenal Stadium from the inside as well as learn about charitable activities of Arsenal Foundation.



Throughout the four weeks there will also be CV workshops, guest talks, and academic and business writing sessions as well as the opportunity to visit London’s many world-renowned art galleries, theatres, and museums. This will be topped off with trips to Oxford and Cambridge, famous for their world-class universities.
