MIREES master's program

Location: University of Bologna-Forlì
Period: September 2007-September 2008
Deadline: May 2007

The Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna, Scientific-Didactic Centre of Forlì (in Italian Polo Scientifico Didattico), "R. Ruffilli" Faculty of Political Science, is launching -for the academic year 2007/2008- through the Istituto per l'Europa Centro-Orientale e Balcanica and in conformity with the Italian Government's Act D.M. N°270/2004, the fourth edition of the Master's Programme "Interdisciplinary Master's Degree in East European Research and Studies (MIREES)". Enrolment is open to postgraduate students with a degree in:
Political Science, Law, Economics, Agriculture, Foreign Languages, Social Sciences, International and Diplomatic Sciences, Communication Science, Italian Language and Culture, Education Science, Arts and Philosophy, and Psychology.
Foreign students with degrees, from BA level upwards, in similar fields or equivalent academic qualifications are also admitted.

Objectives

MIREES aims to develop high quality postgraduate training and education from both an academic and a strongly professional point of view. This Master's programme offers specialization in the economics, politics and international relations, history, sociology and anthropology of South Eastern, Central, and Baltic Europe, as well as of the CIS region. At the same time, the students will choose a country among those in the area of interest for in-depth study, so as to focus on this case study for the Master's final thesis based on research work. To that purpose it is also necessary to acquire, by the end of the two-year programme, a sound knowledge of the language spoken in the country under scrutiny.

Professional profile

MIREES is designed to prepare "Area Experts" that can be inserted into managerial careers in international institutions and organizations, public bodies and private institutions, consulting companies, NGOs and public administrations engaged in developing political, economic, social, or cultural relations with Eastern Europe. Moreover, MIREES -thanks to its mixed approach of study and research- provides an excellent foundation for further studies in case the students are planning to complete a subsequent doctorate programme.

Duration and content of the programme

  • MIREES has the duration of 24 months, subdivided into four academic terms. The students will be given a total of 120 ECTS credits, i.e. 60 credits for each year. In order to be admitted to the second year it is necessary to pass all the first year exams with an end-of-year average of at least 24/30. Attendance at lectures and seminars is compulsory.
  • MIREES schedules a total attendance of 760 class hours, 300 of which devoted to an internship/period of study that the students must do in their third term, within the framework of SOCRATES or other equivalent exchange programmes, in the country where they will be conducting their research activity to collect the materials for the final thesis. The foreseen number of hours devoted to individual study is of 3,000 hours.
  • The lectures will be held by teachers from the Polo Scientifico-Didattico di Forlì (the "R. Ruffilli" Faculty of Political Science, the Faculty of Economics - Forlì seat, and the Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori) as well as by foreign teachers from the partner Universities of the SOCRATES network and other networks created by the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna.
  • All lectures are in English.

Degree awarded and its relation to other degrees

At the end of the study programme, after passing the final examination, the students will achieve the international Master's degree of "Interdisciplinary Master's in East European Research and Studies (MIREES)", which corresponds to the professional profile of "Area Expert".
The MIREES Master's diploma is a degree jointly awarded by the University of Bologna and the following partner universities: University of Ljubljana, Daniel Berzsenyi College of Szombathely, and University of Kaunas.
The partner Universities jointly recognizing the MIREES international Master's degree permit students holding the Italian three-year first level degree and the two-year MIREES Master's diploma to compete for admission to one of the doctorate programmes they offer.
Students holding the MIREES international Master's degree and a previous second level university degree, or comparable qualifications, can take the entry exam and, once enrolled, be permitted to follow a shorter version of the study programme Dottorato in Cooperazione Internazionale e Politiche per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile (Doctorate in International Cooperation and Policies for a Sustainable Development) of the University of Bologna. The decision was made by the Doctorate's Faculty on November 5th 2003.
