Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki and Finnish Centre of Excellence in Russian Studies - Choices of Russian Modernisation launched the Call for Papers "Culture and Russian Society" for the 15th Annual Aleksanteri Conference, taking place on October 21-23, 2015 at the University of Helsinki.
With Vladimir Putin’s third re-election in 2012, the Russian creative class gathered political momentum, and cultural and intellectual practices in Russia regained social and political relevance. At the same time, culture and its traditional institutions have become increasingly integrated into state policies to reconstruct a uniform national Russian identity. The annexation of Crimea, the crisis in Ukraine, and the changing geopolitical landscape have highlighted those Russian views that draw on an understanding of Russia as a unique civilization separate from the West.
The 15th Annual Aleksanteri Conference invites scholars from all fields in humanities, social and political sciences to submit proposals for panels and papers which focus on the cultural challenges and intellectual choices Russia and its diverse population face today. We encourage panel proposals with three presentations, discussant, and chair, but will also review individual paper proposals.
The conference language is English. Individual paper proposals should be in English, but we also welcome bilingual panel proposals (English and Russian).
The deadline for proposals is May 17, 2015. Proposals submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed. Detailed instructions and links to electronic submission forms are available here.
Programme outline for the conference is now published here. Keynote speakers include Catriona Kelly, Vlad Strukov, Vera Tolz, Elena Vartanova, Michael Gorham and Evert van der Zweerde.
