Two courses on Global Terrorism & Peacekeeping
Location: Casa Titulescu in Bucharest, Romania
Period: 17.-19. December 2007
Program
The courses are on "Global Terrorism " and on "Peacekeeping and International Conflict Resolution" and are designed for both undergraduate and graduate students of any discipline (political science, international relations, law, etc) who want to improve their knowledge on these topics.
Upon completion of the course and of the final exam, students earn a certificate from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research on the course that they pursued.
Lecturer
- The lecturer of the two courses, on behalf of the UNITAR POCI, is Prof. Dr. Giovanni Ercolani from Nottingham Trent University (UK), an expert in the field. Prof. Ercolani is a Research Associate at UNITAR POCI, and UNITARPOCI Representative for the Nottingham Trent University (UK). In the past years he has taught in Turkey and at the moment in UK, Italy, Spain, and Slovenia. His courses are part of undergraduate and postgraduate programs and are attended by civilian, military, and law enforcement personnel.
Description of the courses
- GLOBAL TERRORISM
- This short course is designed to offer undergraduate and graduate students a basic introduction to the complex topic of global terrorism.
- The lectures are organized in three meetings, in which the students will receive a complete view of the following aspects related to terrorism:
- * Nature and Matrices of Terrorism: problems of definition; essential elements and typologies;
- * Structure and Operating: analyses of terrorist tactics, political objectives and motivations; profiles of terrorists; structure and practice of terrorist organizations; terrorist armoury and equipment; types of terrorist acts; targets and victims of terrorism;
- * Protagonists and Geopolitical Areas: A historical-geographical approach (Europe, Middle-East, North Africa, the Americas) and a survey at the current trends;
- * Supporters and Criteria of Monitoring: dilemmas of democratic and international response; terrorism and diplomacy; the roblem of state sponsorship and support; problems of international co-operation, including the use of diplomacy, international law and organisation;
- * The Use of Force and Future Threats in Terrorism Worldwide: anti-terrorism and counter-terrorism, police and intelligence measures, war against terrorism; UN, NATO and Terrorism; rethinking security after Sep. 11th and possibly future threats.

- PEACEKEEPING and INTERNATIONAL CONFLICT RESOLUTION
- This short course is organized in three meetings and designed to offer to the students a basic understanding of the field of Conflict Resolution and its application to peacekeeping intervention in contemporary international conflicts.
- The lectures will cover the following topics: The nature of conflict; Key concepts of conflict resolutions; Contemporary conflict dynamics; Conflict mapping; Early warnings and conflict prevention; Peacekeeping and conflict resolution in war zones; Peace settlements and post-conflict peace building; The role of culture in conflict resolution; Gender issue.

Fees: 90 Euro (Global Terrorism); 80 Euro (Peacekeeping)
Certificate: By the end of the course, and upon the payment of a nominal fee, students, who have achieved a passing grade of 75% or higher either in the "UN Global Terrorism Course Final Exam" or in the "UN Peacekeeping and International Conflict Resolution Final Exam", are awarded a Certificate- of-Completion from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, Programme of Correspondence, Instruction in Peacekeeping Operations.
College and ACCP Credits: the U.S. Army Institute for Professional Development (AIPD) has reviewed UNITAR POCI Courses and determined they merit Army Correspondence Course Program (ACCP) credits. US personnel who complete UNITAR POCI courses may have these ACCP credits recorded in their US Army personnel records.
1) Global Terrorism Course provides 54 ACCP credits.
2) Peacekeeping and International Conflict Resolution Course provides 22 ACCP credits.
Transfer Credit: the "American Military University-Transfer Credit Evaluation Center" recognises the UNITARPOCI Certificates for their undergraduate degree programs: http://www.apus.edu/TransferCredit/accepted/Undergraduate/mou/unitar-poci
